Just Start with:

The Incredible Orton Phonograms

Dr. Orton isolated the 72 most used phonograms that represent the common spelling patterns of  the 45 sounds heard in English speech. They are the "primary codes" of English. They are the 26 alphabet letters and 46 multi-letter teams consisting of 2-4 letters, each has 1-6 sounds. These are the primary phonics codes and word-building tools used for speaking, spelling, writing and reading English.

A "Phonogram" is either one letter or a set combination of letters that represent one or more single sounds in a word.

Orton Phonograms & Flash Card Examples

This YesPhonics program features a unique concept of using illustrations of mnemonic catch phrases (keyword captions) that correspond to the sound sequences of the 72 Orton Phonograms with which the students quickly and easily learn the sounds of the phonograms in the order of their use frequency.

The phonogram’s sounds should be rehearsed
until they stand out as a “sound” in a printed word.

The 72 Orton Phonograms teach the 45 single sounds heard in English speech & accelerate    “Phonemic Awareness” which is the understanding that English words are made of tiny  bits of sound (phonemes) that make up words and of being able to hear and recognize them.

The phonograms and spelling rules provide the word building tools needed to break apart and manipulate these sounds to recombine them into single and multi-syllable words in order to quickly and easily learn to speak, write, spell and read English fluently.

Knowing the phonograms’ sounds in the order of use frequency is vital for fast, accurate and fluent reading. The  “keyword caption” articulates the sound sequence of the phonogram that is easily and quickly learned, never to be forgotten.

When the phonics codes of the English Language are taught with the phonograms there is simply no need to separately teach the single sounds of hundreds of blends and word families. These spelling patterns are easily learned with the phonograms and spelling words.

The Orton-based elementary level instruction for all students from Dr. Samuel Orton was developed and published by his student, and elementary teacher Romalda Spalding in her teachers' textbook "The Writing Road to Reading" (1957-2003); known as the "Spalding Method". Also known as Spaulding.

Phonics Taught First and Fast and Spell to Read

To teach reading, phonics is taught first and fast. In the first 5 weeks the students will learn 56 phonograms . They are taught explicitly with the flash cards and a DVD/CD with easy-to-learn illustrations, keyword captions and a Sound-A-Long  feature that depict the phonograms sound sequences. All of the sounds of each phonogram are learned together, not in layers.  All of the phonogram’s sounds must be known from the beginning to spell and read common words that say their 1st to 6th sound such as: ‘me, to, go, she, the, now, you, my, see, all, out, may, look’. They will also learn the first 150 words of the Ayers Spelling List. The words are taught in syllables with spelling rules and word markings that use the lesson plans and students worksheets and they will write and read sentences that they construct from spelling words.

Potential reading abilities will then include hundreds of words that make up the same spelling patterns. All students can quickly grasp these essentials and apply them to any reading context and start reading literature from the library and many other sources of their age-interest that educate and develop a love of reading.

At the completion of the Ayers Spelling Word List at the end of the 3rd level, elementary students can read the longest of unfamiliar words syllable-by-syllable with phonogram word- building tools.  At this point, the students have accelerated their comprehension power and are able to read anything in their vocabulary of about 30,000 words.

Phonemic Awareness

The 72 phonograms teach the 45 sounds heard in English speech. These individual sounds are called “phonemes”. Use the phonograms to teach the 45 “phonemes” for students to achieve phonemic awareness as recommended in the National Reading Panel’s guidelines for Reading First. Phonemic awareness is the knowledge of these tiny segments of sound that make up words. It is literally “sound” awareness and is the understanding that words are made up of sounds and of being able to hear, recognize, and manipulate the individual sounds that make up a word. For example, it is the ability to recognize that the word “dad” is made up of the separate sounds /d/ /a/ /d/. Children vary greatly in their natural ability to hear the sounds within words. Many do not realize the words they hear break apart in to smaller sounds (phonemes). Hearing the individual sounds within a word is difficult because when we            speak, we effortlessly blend all of the sounds together which hides the phonetic nature of spoken language. In order  to read and spell fluently these sounds (phonemes) must first be taught systematically and explicitly in isolation  which is easily accomplished with the phonograms.

Teach Phonic Sounds First - Not Alphabet Letter Names

This phonetic method first teaches the phonic sounds of the alphabet letter phonograms (a-z), rather than the names of the letters. Learning the letter names first confuses students. Learning to write the letters with their sounds links the sounds of speech with the symbols (letters) used for spelling and reading the words. Proper pronunciation, enunciation and articulation are acquired from the beginning.

Phonogram’s Sounds are Learned Together - Not As Layered Phonics

All of the sounds of each phonogram are learned at the same time in the order of use frequency to be filed in the computer brain in one folder for easy recall. All of the sounds of the alphabet letter phonograms and many of the multi-letter phonograms must be known from the beginning for writing, spelling  and reading high frequency spelling words such as: me, to, all, she, the, you, how, low, my, good, out, day, boy.

Systematic & Explicit Phonics

The Orton phonograms teach the systematic and predictable relationships between the letters of written language and the individual sounds of spoken language with direct teaching of a set of letter-sound relationships in a clearly defined sequence. The phonograms are taught explicitly. Explicit phonics moves from the smallest part to the whole. The students first learn the phonograms (letters and set combinations of letters) and their sounds. They then build and recombine them into syllables and words. Knowing these relationships will help students recognize familiar words and accurately and automatically decode and write new words. The mind “frees up” for comprehension only after decoding becomes automatic.

Step-by Step Sequential Teaching Guide

The “Sequence” is the guide for teaching and learning the programs. This sequential step-by-step guide coordinates the presentation of the subjects and integrates the teaching order on a daily, weekly and level (grade) basis in the Phonics Express Program Manual. The “Sequence” is also listed throughout the Ayers Spelling Word List in the manuals.

I searched so long to find a user-friendly way to do Spalding Phonics. The method is unmatched, but “The Writing Road to Reading” is just so cumbersome to learn, plan and implement. With three children under 3, I’m just too busy to do it justice. So I am thrilled to find your program. C.H. Omaha, NE

No Teacher Training Needed!

These YesPhonics programs need no teacher training and are designed for experienced and inexperienced teachers, tutors and parents. The step-by-step "Sequence" coordinates the presentation of the subjects and integrates the teaching order and how to teach the phonograms, spelling words, spelling rules and beginning grammar with the lesson plans and worksheets. The programs are sequenced Levels 1, 2, & 3 (kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade) and are used for all learners from beginning to advanced students.

Just Start: The teacher learns along with the student!

“Pauline Adamson has developed a wonderful set of self-help teaching aids based on the phonics program, “The Writing Road to Reading” by Romalda Spalding. As an elementary school teacher who uses the Spalding approach, I highly recommend Mrs. Adamson’s material.” Jean Zier. Mrs. Zier is a 1st and 2nd grade Spalding teacher and curriculum director in an award winning school at Roberts MT; she also gives credited teachers’ workshops on the Spalding method.

Multi-Sensory Comprehensive Literature Based Reading Program

These Orton-Spalding method based comprehensive phonetic language arts programs use a multisensory approach of seeing, saying, hearing and writing the phonograms and spelling words from dictation. A multi-sensory method has a synergistic effect of addressing the preferred learning style while reinforcing the less developed modalities. Using this method all students will understand the concepts being taught whether they have an auditory, visual, verbal or kinesthetic/tactile individual preferred learning style mode and motor channels. This method is multi-sensory; it develops the eyes, ears, voice, hand and arm muscles, and the right and left sides of the brain concurrently. This teaching strategy fully integrates the students mind’s natural learning dispositions; it motivates everyone - brilliant, average and challenged students of every age.

These literature based programs use age appropriate books from the library, bookstore, newspapers, magazines and other sources; no limiting vocabulary controlled readers are used.

Ayers Spelling Word List

The Ayers Spelling Word List consists of 1000 high frequency words most commonly used in everyday English with 300 added derivatives and related words. The words are taught in syllables with a multi-sensory approach directly from dictation. How to teach instructions accompany each word with its vowels sound sequences and teaching tips. This method guarantees accurate spelling and fluent reading

Spell and Write to READ!

Phonics awareness and auditory processing skills can be more precisely and efficiently taught through spelling rather than randomly taught through "implicit" phonics applied to pronouncing words for reading. Phonics for reading alone gives only approximate pronunciations for many words. Early learning of correct spelling patterns (while avoiding programming of misinformation such as "invented" spellings as in phonics: fonics, fonix, phonix), allows primary and elementary students to write with increased precision and creativity. As a result, they can then read at their interest and speaking vocabulary levels enjoying quality literature with its obvious benefits.

The students learn to construct literate English sentences by using high frequency words as taught in the Ayers Spelling List (not only low frequency words in categories or of the letters/phonograms being taught). From the beginning they construct oral and written sentences using the spelling words. The student's first reading "in context" experience is to read the sentences they have written from words in their Spelling Notebook. Correct spelling of words are the same as standard "book print". Accurate spelling facilitates fluent reading and creative writing.

In the program manual the Ayers Spelling List of words are in syllables and are written from dictation. The intention is not to memorize, but rather to learn how to spell words by listening to and writing the sounds. The sound/symbol relationships and spelling rules that should be taught with the phonograms and spelling words are highly relevant because those who do not know them cannot learn to spell except by whole-word memorization. Spelling must be learned in syllables along with the spelling rules. When the phonograms are taught with the spelling rules, 93-97% of English is phonetically accurate.. This knowledge is a real short cut to spelling accuracy. Learning one rule for many words is much easier than learning each word individually. The spelling words are referenced to the 29 Spalding spelling rules that are taught with Lesson Plans and Worksheets.

In the spelling lessons the students obtain the basic knowledge of how the written language works. At the completion of the spelling list at the end of the 3rd level (sequenced: kindergarten, first grade, second grade and third grade)  the student can decode (read/pronounce) the longest of unfamiliar words syllable-by-syllable. At this point, students are able to read anything in their comprehension vocabulary of about 30,000 words. Compare this with the 900 words third-graders are able to read using Whole Language.

Think to Spell, Schwa, Word Markings,

ESL: Write and Spell to Read and Speak & Picture Dictionary

Think to Spell: Worldwide English Spellings are relatively uniform, whereas speech is very diverse. We use ‘Think to Spell’ as a memory device, the word should be sounded and spelled the way it is written as in: b/ee/n (not bin), s/ai/d (not sed) /a/.round (not /uh/round), then said the way that your culture says it.

Schwa: In the rhythm of speech, vowels in unstressed syllables are often muffled and sound like /uh/. In these syllables the vowel’s sound should be stressed and taught as it is written as in: rel/a/tive (not  rel/uh/tive), Unless we ‘think’ the vowel as it is written, spelling will not be accurate.

Word Markings: Marking the spelling words by using numbers, underlining and identification marks, identifies the phonogram’s sound as it is used in the sequence, multi-letter phonograms and indicates spelling rules.

ESL: Write and Spell to Read and Speak: In many cases individuals whose first language is not English, who have good memorization skills (about 10% with photographic memory, ), will learn to write, spell and read English but are unable to fluently speak English. When the learner has the combined tools of: 1) knowing the sounds in sequence of use for the 72 basic Orton phonograms that say the 45 individual single sounds of English speech, 2) learn to spell words in syllables with spelling rules, 3) use the memory devices of  ‘Think to Spell’ and word markings, then their ability to pronounce the word is enhanced.

Picture Dictionary: The use of a picture dictionary that has many words with pictures is of great value to students that are learning English as a second language of all ages, as well as elementary students. In the space under the word, the word may be written in syllables with word markings thus giving the student clues to its correct pronunciation.

Prepare Your Child for College in Elementary School

Now is the foundational period for your child's success in all of life's challenges. The Phonics for English Reading, Spelling & Writing Express Program Manual is sequenced Levels 1-3 (K, 1st grade, 2nd grade and 3rd grade) for beginning students in school and   homeschool.  Other learners (remedial to advanced) should start at the beginning and work through the program at their own pace.

Thank you so much, I am thrilled to review this product. I had no idea there was such an easy way to teach the phonograms and the spelling list, this is a curriculum we will be telling our parents about." Sincerely, VA, Curriculum Center Coordinator of the Children’s Center, Memphis TN.

“The YesPhonics program is wonderful! My 5-year-old is reading after three months of one-hour daily lessons. He is really proud of himself. I just want you to know that I’m very pleased to have found this program. It has been a positive experience for our whole family”. (Update: He is reading newspapers in the 1st grade) an inexperienced homeschool mom, C.S. Fairview, MT.

Not only for those children that are dyslexic, but for all children.    I have a true phonics child (wouldn’t read till he understood why) and a sight-word child. Both did well with    your program and became better readers because of it. Thank you so much for taking the time to put it together.

I bought the program after trying to use “The Writing Road to Reading” (the book). I was very frustrated by it  and did a web search and found your site. This was 4 years ago, in 2001. I live in Utah and have homeschooled  for 4 years. Yours was the very first curriculum I ever bought. LL in Utah
